YES! I love a stock RX-7 and rotors are just plain awesome. Who doesn't love an engine revving to the atmosphere screaming its head off the entire way? However, that maintenance cost and constant rebuilds must be murderous on the wallet. I approve of the LS swap. Powerful, reliable and sounds great. I am fine with this as long as the owner still has the original engine somewhere.

My only problem with putting an LS engine in an RX7 is that if you wanted a 2 door, 2 seater, with pop up headlights and an LS V8.
Was a corvette really such a bad alternative?

Well, the Corvette is less interesting, heavier, less sophisticated and much much cheaper. So, no, not a bad alternative at all, but there are plenty of reasons for doing a swap.
Personally i think the FD is one of the best looking cars ever made. That makes it worth it to me.

No... But the C5 was just the start of a return to greatness, and there are a ton of C5s on the road. How many RX7s are there, and better yet... how many with an LS. C6/ C7 as alternatives... I might stick with the Corvette.

I'll one-up you with a 2JZ swap into a FD.
And a rotary-powered Corvette.

Well, I'm pretty sure that common mods will fill the bill. (Fuck I accidentally a rhyme).

If this was 2002, maybe. But probably 1/3 of FD RX-7s that caught the apex seal dysentery are LS-powered now. Unless you get the iron block truck engine, it's less than 100 lbs heavier and while you don't get the high rpm scream, you do have usable torque.
If I had the money I would get one and drop in a flathead Ford just to troll the rotary crowd.

Both of them are practically the same weight, but the C5 edges out the RX-7 in the handling department. They took a page out of the Alfa Romeo bible and shoved the transmission in the back.

I dunno if a car is automatically better handling because it has a rear mounted transmission. I suppose handling is subjective, but i suspect stock for stock that the Corvette has more grip, while the RX-7 feels nicer. As for being practically the same weight, i guess. Sort of. I think the RX-7 was around 2700-2800 lbs where as i think the C5 is about 3200-3300 lbs. I'm not sure how much a swap costs the RX 7 in terms of weight but i'd be surprised it it was much more than 100 lbs.
Again, a C5 is much much cheaper and a great car in it's own right. I just think we're stretching things a bit by calling both cars about the same weight. The RX7 is clearly a smaller car and is appropriately lighter.

Not really - It's light with the rotary engine in and a close example to the 50/50 distribution compared to the Corvette which feels nicer and handles better. I mean, sure, it doesn't look like it but it's going to handle and drive better.

Well I don't think the ls actually weighs a ton more than the rotary, turbo plumbing is heavy and sequential turbos have a lot of plumbing. Maybe another 100lbs or so?
As for driving feel, I don't have any time in either car. I have been led to believe that the fd is one of the sweetest handling cars of all time. No one has ever described a c5 to me in nearly as glowing terms. But as I said, mine is an opinion formed only on hearsay, magazine reviews and second hand accounts.
Ultimately though I'm unlikely to change my opinion: nicely swapped ls rx7s are friggin sweet for a myriad of reasons. And C5 corvettes are pretty cool too.

I'll be honest. I actually drove a swapped FD for a reasonable time and wonder why bother? It doesn't feel nice to drive in compared to a C5 and people are wasting their money and are ignorant.
I can't really call this an opinion, can I?

I dont see why you couldn't call it an opinion. It's just based on actual seat time.
